This link Home | columbianews. will take you to a video interview with Leonard Downie Jr and Michael Schudson. It's an overview of what you'll learn if you read their new report "The Reconstruction of American Journalism."
I can't help but wonder, if magazine publishers should be paying close attention to how newspapers retain relevance? Is financial support for magazines going to come from foundations, philanthropists, universities and citizen donors on some level in the future? Philanthropists and foundations already provide support to American arts and culture, so would it be a stretch to consider funding for arts and culture consumer magazines come from here too? But, isn't there a fine line when it comes to philanthropic news ventures in the readership ultimately having to decide if the content remains unbiased?
I think a good point made in the video interview is that there is this frenzy to find a new business model and instead of thinking that there will be this one over riding model to replace the old one we should realize that there will not be one, but many models. Time will tell which of these will work.
Also, David Carr wrote a great article about it in The New York Times Oct. 19, 2009. "A Newsroom Subsidized? Minds Reel."
I'm looking forward to digging into the full report.
