This is just a note to self: James Sturdivant's Oct. 2009 article "Why Are Some Magazines Thriving?" in Publishing Executive offers some examples of the media mix in play, serving a middle of the tail niche market and conservitively building community online.
The article focuses on Hoffman Media, and although they are doing well by basing their circulation model on premium pricing and delivering a premium product to loyal readers...I think they have selected their target markets (niche areas that are focused yet large enough to be sustainable long-term), they have a nice media mix now but I do think they could better utilize the Internet.
Anyway...look here to fill out this part of the outline.
